Sermon Series: Revealing God's Plan

Pastor Bill's new sermon series "Revealing God's Plan" is a powerful reminder to Christians that we are called to join God on mission.  In Genesis 12:1b God told Abraham, "leave your country, your people, and your father's household and go to the land I will show you."  Pastor Bill shared with us that Adoniram Judson, in proposing to Ann Hassletine, wrote a letter to her father which said: "I have now to ask, whether you can consent to part with your daughter early next spring...whether you can consent to her exposure to the dangers of the ocean, to the fatal influence of the southern climate of India; to every kind of want and distress; to degradation, insult, persecution, and perhaps a violent death."  Her father replied, "she can decide for herself." Adoniram Judson laid it out pretty clearly: following Jesus comes with a price. The fact that Ann said "yes" to his proposal is a dynamic illustration of true passion for Christ and a willingness to serve no matter what.

My story in no way compares to that of the Judsons, but 9 years ago I was serving as youth pastor in a church near where I grew up.  From all accounts it was utopia.  My parents and some of my wife's family lived nearby, we had built a nice home just a short distance from the church, there were lots of youth participating, and there were many workers to help out.  Everything seemed perfect.  One day, I felt a call of God to move on to something else.  I did not know what, but just that I needed to move on.  I resisted this call, and my health went down very quickly.  Finally, I just gave in and resigned from our church, waiting on God for answers.  As soon as I surrendered to God, He began to show me what He wanted me to do and where He wanted me to go.  Now that we've been here in Ruston almost 8 years, I wish I would have been obedient sooner and could have avoided a lot of heartache in my life and in the life of my family.

So what about you?  Is God calling you to something that requires you to get out of your routine, safe, comfort zone?  Have you ever been on a mission trip?  Is God calling you to a new area of service at your local church?  Even though it may seem risky, there is no safer condition than to be in God's Will.  May God give you wisdom as you seek His specific calling for your life.
