Be Active in a Christian Life Group
Some time ago Calvary changed the name "Sunday School Classes" to "Life Groups." There are various reasons for this. One is that a few of these groups meet on a different day than Sunday. Another more impacting reason is that we are trying to create a culture where Christians experience way more from their small group than just one brief meeting time per week. As believers, we are called to live in community with Christ and with each other.
As a "vocational minister," I have been responsible to create and help grow small groups for years. In those early years of ministry, I was so busy helping other people get involved in small groups or leading small groups that I failed to make simply being in a small group a priority for myself and my wife Michelle. Also, Michelle and I would both serve as group leaders for separate groups, so we were not always together at church. The result was that often we felt spiritually dry and spent, investing so much into others and their needs, but failing to adequately attend to our own spiritual needs.
In 2015 Calvary formed a new life group called "Faith Journey." The idea driving this group is that we are all on a journey to grow and experience life together as followers of Jesus Christ. Having as one of our goals to be multi-generational, we have a broad age span in our group, which has singles and married people. It is so great to be part of a vibrant, dynamic group that I am not leading or in charge of...just a member. I do occasionally have the opportunity to facilitate a lesson for our group, as do 3 or 4 other members of our group. I enjoy visiting with people in my group that I view as mentors and accountability partners...I can be honest and share my heart with these people. When I am experiencing hard challenges, there are other men in this group I can turn to for advice and prayer. When Michelle had the flu recently, one of the women brought us a pot of delicious soup and cornbread...wow...what a blessing! After church this past Sunday our group had lunch together. It was great...our kids were there, we had a couple of visitors join us, and everyone got to visit and get updated on what's happening in people's lives.
I don't know what we'd do without our awesome small group! My hope is that others who are not in a small group will see what they are missing and join one as soon as possible! So, come check out life groups at Calvary. I'm pretty sure we have one that's a great fit for you!
